At The Temple Spaces, I hold the belief that every space has the potential to be a sacred sanctuary—a place of healing, peace, and transformation. One of the most loving and powerful rituals I offer to clear away heavy energy and invite in light is smudging. This ancient practice has the ability to bring balance, restore harmony, and invite healing energy into our lives.
What is Smudging?
Smudging is the beautiful practice of using sacred herbs—such as sage, palo santo, or sweetgrass—and their smoke to purify the energy in a space, a person, or an object. It’s a ritual passed down through many cultures, especially Native American and Indigenous traditions, to clear stagnant or negative energy and restore peace. The smoke itself is filled with loving, healing properties that bring the energy of the earth and sky into our sacred spaces.
Why is Smudging Important?
Our environment is deeply connected to our emotional, mental, and spiritual states. When we experience life’s challenges, our spaces can absorb energy that no longer serves us. Just as we clear the clutter in our homes, we must also clear the clutter of energy in the spaces around us. Smudging creates an opportunity to reset, restore, and invite in fresh, loving energy.
Smudging can help you:
Release what no longer serves you: Whether you’re releasing old habits, emotions, or energies that feel stuck or heavy, smudging allows you to let go and make space for new growth.
Restore balance and peace: With each wave of the smoke, you create a space filled with harmony, where healing and clarity can flow freely.
Invite in light and love: Smudging is a beautiful way to open your heart and soul to the blessings of love, light, and positive energy. It’s a gentle invitation for divine energy to fill your life and space.
The Ritual of Smudging
To begin your ritual, gather your materials: a bundle of sage, palo santo, or any sacred herbs that speak to you, a fireproof bowl or shell, and a lighter or matches. Here’s how you can perform the ritual:
Set Your Intention with Love: Before you begin, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Inhale love and exhale anything that feels heavy. Set an intention for the ritual. It could be a prayer for peace, healing, or simply a wish to create a loving, calm space. Whatever feels right for you, let it flow from your heart.
Light Your Smudge: Light the tip of the smudge stick and let it burn for a few moments. Blow out the flame gently, and let the smoke rise. Hold the smudge in your hand, or place it in a fireproof bowl to catch the ashes.
Move Through the Space with Care: Slowly walk through your space, allowing the smoke to gently cleanse the area. With each movement, visualize the smoke clearing away any old, stagnant energy. Let it make way for new, fresh energy that invites healing, peace, and love.
Cleansing Yourself and Others: After you’ve smudged the space, you can use the smoke to cleanse yourself or others. Hold the smudge stick in your hands and move it around your body, allowing the smoke to gently surround you. As you do this, let the smoke clear away any heaviness, and restore balance and peace to your energy.
Close the Ritual with Gratitude: Once you’ve finished, give thanks for the healing that has taken place. You can allow the smudge to burn out naturally or extinguish it in a fireproof bowl. Take a moment to breathe deeply and feel the loving energy that now fills your space.
Inviting Light into Your Sacred Space
Smudging isn’t just about clearing what no longer serves us - it’s also about inviting in the light, love, and energy that nurtures our soul. After the space is cleansed, you may wish to add other practices—such as lighting a candle, placing crystals, or playing soft music—to help keep the space in a peaceful, healing vibration. Each act is a reminder that you deserve to live surrounded by beauty, love, and light.
At The Temple Spaces, I believe that every moment spent in a sacred space can help you reconnect to the deeper truths within yourself. Smudging is one of the many ways I invite you to create a space where healing, growth, and love can flourish.
May your space always be a reflection of the light and love within yo
